After having moved back to the United States and settling in Portland, Oregon, I read in the local paper about a jazz concert benefiting a 17 year old musical prodigy who had earned a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music. The accompanying photo showed an itty bitty tiny little skinny girl with[…]

Latin rock band out of San Francisco formed in 1970 and featuring virtuoso guitarist Santana – not Carlos but little brother Jorge. The original lineup lasted only until their first album with many of the former members finding fame in other rock and jazz groups. Sintesis

One of the most popular bands in Cuba during the ’80s and ’90s but prevented from performing in the U.S due to the embargo against Cuba. This made the band even more popular everywhere else and engendered a cult following among world music fans. Their music is rock/jazz fused with Cuban Creole sounds.

Originally a jam band composed of musicians from various bands around Wellington, New Zealand. After developing a cult following in Europe, the Fat Freddy project gradually became its members’ sole focus. Parts jazz, dub, reggae, ska, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno mixed in a Māori stew.

Her music blends her jazz, soul, country, and pop influences. Her first album, “Come Away With Me”, blends mellow acoustic pop sounds with soul and jazz. Her second,[…]

Ximena Sariñana

Daughter of director Fernando Sariñana and writer Carolina Rivera. She started her acting career as an 11 year old telenovela villain and has since become an established film star in Mexico. She sings in a jazzy flat croon, songs of self-introspective seduction.

Marian Hill

In a middle school production of the Music Man, Samantha Gongol and Jeremy Lloyd played the leads Marian Paroo and Harold Hill. When their paths crossed years later, they formed an EDM duo that combines Jeremy’s technical wizardry with Samantha’s sultry singing. The Marian Hill formula: Jeremy lays down a beat over which Samantha adds[…]
